Langney trolley misery - end in sight

July 4, 2006 11:00 PM

The ongoing issue of abandoned supermarket shopping trolleys in the Langney area may soon be at an end. Local residents have long been troubled by the presence of a large number of deserted trolleys.

Langney councillor Troy Tester said "These trolleys have been a real blight on Langney for far too long. They are an eyesore, they cause damage to private property and are being used in any number of anti-social activities. The current situation simply could not be allowed to continue."

Troy Tester, Stephen Lloyd and local resident with an abandonned Tesco trolley on the Kent EstateCllr Tester and Cllr Sims recently held a meeting with Tesco at the Langney Shopping Centre about the problem. Cllr Tester added: "I'm pleased to be able to report that at our meeting the new manager of the supermarket was very responsive to the concerns of local people. He informed us that in the forthcoming refit of the store there was a proposal to install a magnetic wheel locking system to prevent the trolleys being taken away and abandoned."

Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman Stephen Lloyd said upon hearing the news "I'm delighted that Cllr Tester is getting results so soon after being elected. Local people will be pleased at the news, and although most of the trolleys come from the supermarket there are a few from other shops. I hope they follow the example that Tesco is giving"

Notes

1/ The refit is scheduled to start in late August or early September and will take roughly four or five weeks to complete.
