Lib Dems fight Conservative Council's rent hike for Borough FC

November 9, 2006 11:54 AM

Parliamentary Campaigner Stephen Lloyd with Lib Dem Council Group Leader David Tutt campaigning against the Council's hike in Borough FC's rentLocal Lib Dem campaigners have slammed reports that Conservative-run Eastbourne Council wants to increase Borough FC's rent from £3,000 to £17,000 per year - and backdate it several years too!

Opposition Leader David Tutt said: "I cannot believe the Conservative-run Council is serious about introducing such a huge rent increase on what is a real Eastbourne success story. Borough FC has gone from strength to strength over the years and it would be madness to penalise them in such a way. The Conservative leadership on the council should be ashamed of themselves. I can promise that the Lib Dems will fight this daft proposal every inch of the way."

Parliamentary campaigner Stephen Lloyd added: "I have had the pleasure of meeting with the senior staff at the Borough and been shown all the wonderful work they do in the community. It would be typically short sighted and, frankly, mean-spirited for the Conservatives to introduce such an enormous hike in rent. Our football club has invested a great deal of time and money into their site at Priory Road - which before was just an empty field. The rent may need to go up a little but the right way to do this is to fix a rate which takes into account the tremendous good work the Borough does locally, as well as enhance the reputation of our town by being such a successful football club.

David Tutt commented: "We will be launching a campaign to stop this ridiculous rent increase. Unless it is stopped other voluntary organisations may find their rents are increased or support cut. Since being reported in the paper I have been inundated with calls from supporters of the Boro asking for our help."
