Growing opposition to Tally-Ho mobile mast

December 21, 2006 11:55 AM
Protest outside the Tally-Ho pub

Old Town residents protesting against the proposal to site a mobile phone base station at the Tally Ho Pub.

Despite overwhelming opposition from local residents two months ago when mobile phone company 'Hutchinson 3G' revealed they were planning to site a mobile phone mast at the Tally-Ho pub the application is going forward into it's next phase.

Old Town resident and Lib Dem parliamentary challenger, Stephen Lloyd, said: "I am very disappointed that the mobile phone company has so casually disregarded the views of the 170 residents who signed the Old Town Lib Dem original petition saying they did not want a mobile mast at the Tally Ho pub. It does make one wander whether these pre-consultation exercises are anything more than an expensive charade? The mobile phone company Hutchinson 3G appears determined to progress with their application, and have come back seeking prior approval from the Council on the siting and appearance of the mast.

"I would ask that all concerned local residents near the Tally Ho pub write to the Planning Committee at the Town Hall expressing their opposition to this mobile mast. The matter will be considered by the Planning Committee on the 9th January 2007. I will be attending the meeting personally to speak against the application.

Old Town Lib Dem campaigner Carolyn Heaps added: "The Tally Ho Public House is owned by Punch Taverns. Our opposition is not aimed toward the current Licensees of the pub but at its owners. I would urge local residents write to the Chief Executive of Punch Taverns, Mr Giles Thorley, expressing their opposition as local residents. If we can persuade Punch Taverns that it is not in their best interests in serving the needs of their local customers, they can refuse permission to allow Hutchinson 3G to install the mast. It simply cannot be right that the views of local people can be so wilfully ignored."

Please voice your opposition to:

Punch Taverns, Jubilee House, Second Avenue, Burton-Upon-Trent, Staffs DE14 2WP.
