Lib Dems say 'Stop Post Office closures'

Lib Dems campaign to save our Post Offices Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesman Stephen Lloyd has joined forces with local Councillors and campaigners to launch a campaign to stop Post Office closures in Eastbourne & Willingdon.

Mr Lloyd said five post offices are due to close locally: Langney Post Office in Etchingham Road, Marine Parade Post Office in Seaside, The Broadway Post Office in Hampden Park, Wish Hill Post Office in Willingdon and Farmlands Way Post Office in Wannock.

Stephen Lloyd, who is leading the Lib Dem campaign locally, commented: "There is a very short consultation period running so we have no time to lose to make our voices heard. Once the post offices have closed, it will be far more difficult to bring them back."

The Lib Dems have this week launched a town-wide petition to stop these closures. Mr. Lloyd said that he was asking local residents to sign his petition, which is available at many local shops, or to sign the petition online at www.saveourpostoffices.org.uk. The petition is also available at the Lib Dem office at 100 Seaside Road.

"We need to campaign vigorously if we are to avoid the loss of these local post offices, which are such a key part of our community in different parts of the town. A fifth of all the post offices in the country due to close under this programme, so that thousands of Post Office users are going to be deprived of a friendly face and a local service" said Lloyd."

Lib Dem campaigners will also be running a street stall in the Town Centre this Friday 16th November, to collect signatures to stop these closures.

Councillor Gill Mattock, who's local residents are affected by the Etchingham Road Post Office, added, "Local people remember the campaign Stephen Lloyd and the Lib Dems ran a few years ago to fight the closure of the Hampden Park Post Office in Brassey Parade. The huge level of local support then was absolutely fantastic, so much so that a new Post Office was opened soon afterwards. This just shows that people power can work - and we hope to achieve the same this time."
