Why can't Police issue tickets in Eastbourne as well?

July 26, 2008 12:00 AM

PhotographLiberal Democrat campaigners have been shocked to discover that the Police and Community Support Officers issued more than 1,600 parking tickets in Bexhill last year.

Lib Dems in Eastbourne want the Police and Community Officers to be allowed to issue parking tickets here in Eastbourne, just like they do in Bexhill and in other parts of East Sussex.

Eastbourne Council Leader David Tutt said, "The message from Eastbourne residents and businesses is clear. They want what the people of Bexhill and other parts of East Sussex already have - the Police and Police Community Support Officers (PCSO's) to ticket illegally parked cars. Just think what a difference that would make to local traffic problems in Eastbourne?."

"In Bexhill over the last 12 months over 1600 parking tickets have been issued."

Lib Dem Parliamentary campaigner Stephen Lloyd added, "The Conservatives who run the County Council appear determined to bring in their unpopular parking charges to Eastbourne. This massively unpopular plan will be yet another stealth tax upon local people and local businesses. Worse still, its unlikely the town will see any of the money collected from the parking charges for years. In Lewes around £3,000,000 has already been paid to NCP but, five years later, nothing has gone to the District Council."

"With proper enforcement by the Police and others under there control, we could put an end to illegal parking, without taxing Eastbourne's residents and businesses."
