Action is needed now to stop major flooding in the years ahead, say Liberal Democrats in Eastbourne.
With climate change leading to wetter weather and melting of the polar ice caps leading to rising sea levels, many areas in the UK are under threat of flooding. Coastal towns such as Eastbourne are under particular threat. Only a few years ago flooding in Eastbourne Park nearly reached Kings Drive.
Local campaigner, Stephen Lloyd, met up recently with the Liberal Democrats' Shadow Secretary of State for the Environment, Steve Webb MP, to demonstrate what could happen if no action is taken to stop further climate change taking place.
Liberal Democrat plans to cut down on carbon emissions which are leading to climate change include:
Cutting income tax and make polluters pay instead - so it pays to go green
Making energy companies use windfall profits to insulate homes, reducing emissions and cutting bills
Shifting to cleaner, greener energy, with incentives for a massive expansion of renewable projects
"We need decisive action now to tackle the carbon emissions that are causing flooding," said Stephen. "Liberal Democrat plans will give us all the opportunity to turn the tide and stop further damage to our environment."
He added: "Our recent success against new homes being built on the flood plain by Kings Drive does show, however, that we all need to remain vigilant. Despite evidence to the contrary some property developers still try to ram home the building of new estates, even in the most inappropriate of places."
