Mr Clegg was at Eastbourne Town Hall hosting a public meeting and together with Local Liberal Democratic Parliamentary Candidate Stephen Lloyd, he agreed to assist Thank The Forces Charity in their work to raise funds to support British Forces Personnel serving on the front line in Afghanistan.

At the end of the public meeting Stephen Lloyd who volunteers and assists Thank The Forces Charity in their work, asked members of the meeting if they would kindly donate to Thank The Forces Charity as they left the Eastbourne Town Hall.

Thank The Forces volunteers collected over £230.00 in just a few minutes and Stephen Lloyd and Nick Clegg were pleased to assist in the collection.

Local Liberal Democratic Parliamentary Candidate Stephen Lloyd said

"I am so pleased we had an opportunity to raise more funds for such a worthy cause 'Thank The Forces' do a great job sending parcels to our men and women on the frontline. The letters and e-mails I've read that have been sent by the troops are truly heart-warming. ..A great local charity which I am proud to support."

Sue Smith said

'Stephen Lloyd has really worked hard to help Thank The Forces Charity and every penny raised means more thanks can be sent to our brave Forces Personnel who are serving in very dangerous and austere conditions.

Every single gift box sent under our agreement with the MOD creates a smile on the face of the recipient and the money raised at the meeting will be used to boost our 2010 appeal.

We are currently raising funds to provide a little 'home comfort' such a wind up radio's, LED lanterns and I pods and speaker systems for the very remote front line bases in Afghanistan.

I would like to express my sincere and grateful thanks to Stephen Lloyd and Nick Clegg for helping to raise such a large amount of money in just a few minutes. A BIG thank you must go to all who donated to Thank The Forces Charity that night.'

Thank The Forces Charity was founded by Eastbourne born Sue Smith whose son serves in the British Army. Sue started Thank The Forces Charity when her son Carl Moir was posted to Afghanistan in the winter of 2007.

Thank The Forces is fully backed and endorsed by the MOD and BFPO and provides the public with a confidential free of charges service to send goodwill and morale messages to British Forces serving in the remote front line operating bases in Afghanistan. They also have pledged to help try and make the front line bases in Afghanistan a 'little more comfortable' for brave British Forces Personnel.
