'Snap' General Election called for June 8th 2017

The Prime Minister, Theresa May, has called for a snap General Election to be held on the 8th of June.

You know my love and commitment to Eastbourne. Serving you once before as your MP was a privilege. It's what I loved, it's what I did and with your backing it's what I will do again.

Tory controlled East Sussex County Council have decided to increase their share of the Council Tax by 5%. They are doing this whilst making ill considered and devastating cuts of £17 million to front-line services, such as Adult Social Care and Children's Services. We are all aware that the Tory Government has reduced funding to local government but this is no excuse for the County Council Tories to slash their budget so irresponsibly. If it were not for the NHS bailing out Adult Social Care by £7 million their budget would not even balance.

In a major statement East Sussex Liberal Democrat Councillors have hit hard at the Conservative minority administration of East Sussex County Council.

Liberal Democrats condemn the government for not properly tackling the funding crisis in Adult Social Care. The Conservative government has said that councils can raise their Council Tax by up to 5%, of which 3% can be used to fund Adult Social Care. This is an extra 1% on what the government had planned. It is not known if the Conservative run County Council will levy the extra 1%. The extra 1% will bring in £2.3 million but will not bridge the funding gap, which in East Sussex has been £6 million each year for the last few years. This continued gap in funding will lead to further cuts which come on top of year on year cuts suffered by Adult Social Care in East Sussex.

In the early hours of this morning it was announced that there will be another Lib Dem in Parliament following the election of Sarah Olney in Richmond Park.

Former Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd said "Our win in Richmond is an absolutely extraordinary result. An increase of around 30% in our vote means the Lib Dems now have a new MP in Westminster. My heartiest congratulations to Sarah Olney and our campaigns team in Richmond. Clearly in Eastbourne where I lost the last general election by a margin of only 1.5% the outcome in Richmond is very encouraging."

You may have heard that we have a by-election in Sovereign Ward on Thursday 24th November because one of the Conservative councillors resigned. We are pleased to say we've got an excellent candidate, Roger Howarth. Stephen Lloyd said "He is a very good friend of mine, as well as being the Eastbourne Lib Dems Treasurer. I know that were he to be elected he'd make an outstanding councillor for the Ward."
