The Shocking Extent of Conservative Waste Revealed

April 18, 2013 11:37 AM

In response to a Freedom of Information request from East Sussex Liberal Democrat Leader David Tutt, the amount of money that Conservative controlled East Sussex County Council have spent on legal claims instead of providing proper services has been revealed.

Over the past 3 years they have paid out almost £3m in legal claims. £1.75m of these relate to Highway claims, much of which could have been saved if the County had repaired the potholes that litter East Sussex roads. They have also paid out over £800k in employee liability claims.

Summary of payments on Public & Employee Liability closed claims 2010 - 2013

Financial year 2010/11 2011/12 2012/13
Highways claims £429,235 £755,192 £591,462
Non Highways claims £ 35,258 £209,024 £ 42,077
Total £464,493 £964,216 £633,539

Employee Liability claims £210,153 £372,618 £224,602

In addition to this the Director of Adult Social Care has confirmed to Old Town Liberal Democrat John Ungar that since May 2003 the Conservative controlled Council has been fined a staggering £ 3,186,783.75 under the Hospitals Discharge Act for delaying the discharge of hospital patients as proper care packages have not been put in place. John said, "This is a shocking waste of money which has been going on for years. If the County Council had put proper services in place they would not been fined this money and many elderly and vulnerable people in our community would not be facing cuts to the services on which they rely. In addition hospital beds would be freed up."

Lib Dem Leader said "when you add these figures together this has cost East Sussex Council Tax Payers more than £6m. This waste has got to stop!"
