MP backs Local Newspaper Week

May 18, 2013 11:31 AM

This year's Local Newspaper Week will be themed around the importance of local papers' freedom to scrutinise authority and hold the powerful to account.

With almost 31 million people reading local newspapers every week and 1,100 local papers published across the UK, their popularity and importance remain high.

Stephen Lloyd MP said: "The Eastbourne Herald and Gazette play a pivotal role locally. They provide a combination of news, community notice board and high quality journalism, and I am one of many thousands of residents who consider it a must to buy their local paper every week. I also appreciate the enormous support the Herald gives to Eastbourne - plaudits when deserved but also holding people and institutions to account where necessary."

He added: I have been struck recently that the shocking behaviour in the media - the illegal phone-tapping of peoples mobiles, bribes to the police for tip-offs and such-like - were entirely restricted to the national newspapers, while the regional newspapers were not involved at all. This is a very important difference and I have made that point to the Deputy Prime Minister."
