Eastbourne & Willingdon Lib Dems

Town’s unemployment continues to fall!

October 18, 2013 3:44 PM

Stephen Lloyd MP has welcomed the latest unemployment figures which show Eastbourne's claimant rate continues to drop.

The latest figures released by the Office for National Statistics this week show that the number of claimants in Eastbourne and Willingdon in September was only 3.8%. This is almost 35% lower than at the height of the recession, and represents an 18% drop over the last 12 months alone.

Stephen Lloyd MP said: "I am absolutely delighted at these figures and having seen how Eastbourne has rolled up its sleeves over the last few years, I'm not surprised at all. We've worked incredibly hard as a town over the last 3 years, bucked the economic trend throughout the recession and now we will be at the forefront of the UK's recovery. I am proud of what we have achieved and know that this is in no way the peak of Eastbourne's exciting journey. The £70 million investment in the Arndale Centre is on course, shop vacancies continue to drop, the Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce keeps coming up with really innovative business ideas, the Town Team are rolling out exciting new proposals for this Christmas, the Council is well on its way with the Devonshire Park complex, and our hospitality sector have had their best summer for years. Eastbourne is a town that is on a roll."

He added: "I will also soon be launching an exciting campaign to help our long term unemployed residents find the essential work experience support to get back into the world of employment, which I'm know will have a really positive impact on the lives of local people. Watch this space!"
