Lloyd continues push for Fast Train to London.

February 25, 2014 2:51 PM

Stephen Lloyd MP has stepped up his campaign for a faster train to London to be included in the upcoming Southern/Thameslink franchise. His call for letters of support has received a good response, and he is making one final push to collect more before sending them off to the Department for Transport (DFT).

The process for the new Southern/Thameslink Franchise is almost at its conclusion. Following the town's submission to the DFT's consultation, Stephen met with all the bidding companies to emphasise the benefits a fast train would bring to them and Eastbourne. The reception was extremely positive, and while the terms of the consultation prohibit the companies from revealing the contents of their bids, it is hoped that most of the bids will include a faster service. Now that the offers are all in, the decision rests with the DFT, and Stephen will be sending all the Town's letters of support ensure Eastbourne's voice is heard.

Since first calling on Eastbourne to write brief notes in support of the campaign, the MP has been inundated with responses, highlighting the need and demand for this fast train. Stephen will be forwarding these on to the Department in 2 weeks time, so is calling on anybody who hasn't written to do so before it is too late. These can be sent to Stephen at stephen.lloyd.mp@parliament.uk or posted to the MP's office at 100 Seaside Road, BN21 3PF.

Stephen said: "The response to my original call for support was superb and the case built by the people of Eastbourne is hugely compelling. Our Town really does come into its own when we all pull together! This last push for messages of support could be all it takes to get my Fast Train Campaign over the line."

He added: "Eastbourne really does have a Buzz about it right now. The £85 Investment in the Arndale Centre, the apprenticeship sector is booming, and the cross-community A27 Campaign is gathering hundreds of signatures and survey responses (both can be found on my website: stephenlloyd.org.uk). Planning for the 3rd Annual Sunshine Carnival has also started, meaning spring can't be too far away either. It's a great time to be in Eastbourne! Let's all get this final push for a fast train so we can lock in our economic prosperity long into the future."
