Lloyd calls for common sense parking in town centre

March 24, 2014 5:09 PM

Stephen Lloyd MP has responded to the County Council's Consultation on the use of loading bays which opened this week.

The MP has been lobbying the County Council for years to allow private vehicles to park in loading bays after 6pm. Previously he had managed to secure a more flexible remit for the lading bays in Seaside Road, allowing restaurant customers to load these in the evenings. Now Stephen is pushing for the bays in the town centre to enjoy the same flexibility. This will free up dozens more parking spaces across Eastbourne.

Stephen said: "I am delighted to hear that the County Council has listened to my and the Chamber of Commerce's calls by announced this consultation. Parking is difficult in our town centre at night, yet we have dozens of empty loading bays sitting there, unused. It makes no sense. I have written to the council a number of times over the years trying to get this addressed and I'm delighted it is now being properly considered.

He added: "Our town centre is really beginning to boom and get a real sense of the Eastbourne Buzz, and demand for parking spaces will only increase as the £85 million Arndale Centre regeneration brings in many new customers. Opening up these loading bays will make a massive difference to local businesses and restaurants. I have responded to the consultation and I would urge everyone anyone who has views on this to do the same.
