SavetheDGH Campaign Launches Option 7

March 25, 2014 4:44 PM

Last week the cross-party SavetheDGH team launched a new option for what they believe to be a flawed consultation into the future of Maternity and Paediatric services in East Sussex. Their Option 7 allows for both Eastbourne DGH and Hastings Conquest hospitals to maintain Consultant-led Maternity care, unlike any of the current 6 options.

The local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are consulting on 6 options that split maternity provision in various ways across Eastbourne and Hastings. Controversially, none of these options include Consultant led maternity at both the Eastbourne and Hastings sites. This was considered essential by the Independent Reconfiguration Panel when it last over-ruled the last attempts in 2008 to remove Consultant led maternity at the DGH.

In response the SavetheDGH campaign has published Option 7. This option has been drafted by consultants and sets out a way for Consultant-led maternity provision to remain at both East Sussex hospitals.

Stephen Lloyd MP said: "I was very disappointed when the consultation into localmaternity services was released and not 1of the 6 options allowed for Consultant-led maternity at both the DGH and the Conquest in Hastings. So the cross-party SavetheDGH team have put together an excellent Option 7 which we all must encourage the local NHS Trust to adopt. I'm asking local residents to email Better Beginnings on this address: HRCCG.betterbeginnings@nhs.net, saying that it is your preferred option. We don't have a lot of time to push this through, and as ever, your help is much appreciated. We will also be sending it to the members of the Health Overview Scrutiny Committee who are considering the 6 proposals put forward, so they have an opportunity to see our own Option 7."

Liz Walke, Chair of the SavetheDGH Campaign said: "The only option which should be considered is our Option 7 - the only 2-site option for consultant-led Maternity and Paediatrics. It's truly outrageous that the local NHS have not done what was stipulated by the previous Secretary of State for Health and it has been left to us to put this forward. However I hope that many people will support this and the single-site arrangement will be stopped with people in charge who really want two-sites to work. We are so grateful to our medical advisors and other medical professionals who have helped us produce Option 7 and now we demand that it is implemented."
