Stephen Lloyd welcomes English Language Schools to Westminster

May 19, 2014 3:09 PM

Last week (Tuesday 13th May) Stephen Lloyd MP greeted representatives from English Language Schools throughout the country to a reception in Westminster, on the eve of their trade body, English UK's, annual conference.

MPs from across the political spectrum and representatives from accredited English Language centres in the state and private sectors attended the event, which recognised the important role that English Language centres play in the national economy as well as the benefits they bring to local communities, not just to schools and staff but to local families who can earn over £4,000 a year from hosting students.

Stephen said: It was a pleasure to welcome English UK and their guests in Parliament last week. The whole sector had quite a challenging time in the last few years but has come through very well, certainly in Eastbourne, and it was good to celebrate the work that English language schools do both locally and beyond. In our own town the economic benefit students bring to host families as well as Eastbourne and Willingdon as a whole is tremendous. Their input is estimated to be well over £20m to the local economy!"

Tony Millns, the chief executive of English UK, thanked Stephen for sponsoring the event and the other MPs and peers in the room for their continued support. He said: "It has been extremely valuable during the decade since English UK was formed that we have support on a cross-party, non-partisan basis across Parliament. I also appreciate the role that Stephen took a few years ago when he led a cross-party team of parliamentarians in persuading the Home Office to reinterpret a new piece of legislation which, had they not done so, would have caused real damage to reputable Language Schools in Eastbourne and beyond. His leadership was vital to the success of our fight!"
