Tugwell Park unveils QE2 Fields Challenge award at first Community Funday

July 2, 2014 4:30 PM

The Friends of Tugwell Park in Hamden Park, held their first Community Funday at Tugwell Park recently. It was a huge success and everybody had a great day. The sun was shining and that combined with the Funfair, dog show and family sports day contributed to a fantastic day attended by over 800 people. The day also featured the unveiling of Tugwell Park's prestigious QE2 award, presented to the Park to secure its legacy as a local community hub and protect it for the future.

Councillor Jim Murray said: "It is days like this when the community comes together that are why I became a Councillor. I am really pleased that so many local residents got behind this terrific event. It makes all the hard work that the small committee did to put this event on worthwhile. Congratulations go to the 'Big Mummas', who trounced the men in the Tug-of-War event, highlighting the community spirit of pulling together! The Friends of Tugwell Park are looking forward to organising next year's event and would welcome any new members to the committee to help for 2015. Please contact the members through the website. www.tugwellpark.com"

Stephen Lloyd MP, who unveiled the plaque, added: "I was delighted to attend such a lovely day out and congratulations to everyone who organised this successful event. I know many people would join me in also thanking Eastbourne Borough Council for all the effort they put in to saving green spaces around our town. Eastbourne leads the way in the South East for securing green areas in perpetuity to the people of the town, with only London setting aside more, so I was very pleased to unveil another of the 20+ plaques that are now in place across the town. Good for Tugwell Park, good for Hampden Park and good for Eastbourne!"

Councillor Mike Thompson commented: "It is so important to keep these green areas safe for the people of the town for ever, so that they have safe areas to play and meet our neighbours. This is the second QE2 plaque now in our area, with the Hampden Park itself receiving their plaque earlier in the year."
