Tories Slash Vital Services Whilst HIKING UP Taxes

March 6, 2017 1:15 PM

Tory controlled East Sussex County Council have decided to increase their share of the Council Tax by 5%. They are doing this whilst making ill considered and devastating cuts of £17 million to front-line services, such as Adult Social Care and Children's Services. We are all aware that the Tory Government has reduced funding to local government but this is no excuse for the County Council Tories to slash their budget so irresponsibly. If it were not for the NHS bailing out Adult Social Care by £7 million their budget would not even balance.

The Liberal Democrats, who are the main opposition at East Sussex County Council, have put forward plans that would have saved many front-line services by making cuts to back-office services and reducing waste. Councillor Pat Rodohan said,"It is a shameful day when the Tories would not take up the common-sense Liberal Democrat plans which would have saved frontline services that the most vulnerable in our community desperately need. I think it is an absolute scandal, particularly when we see the Conservative administration has overspent £70 million on the Bexhill relief road."

"To cap this sorry state of affairs it has also come to light that the Tories have moved approximately £5 million worth of cuts to Children's Services, including those with Special Needs, into next year. This is after the elections. Who are they trying to fool?"
