Lib Dems call for public to have final say on Brexit

November 15, 2018 11:04 AM
On Wednesday evening, 14th November, Eastbourne Borough Council voted on a motion calling for the UK's people to have the final say on Brexit.
The motion, put forward by Cllr Steve Wallis and supported unanimously by the Lib Dem Council group, highlighted the importance of respecting the 2016 referendum but, in light of the Government's inability to agree a deal on the UK's future relationship with the EU, required the ultimate decision on the UK's future to be made by the people. This 'People' s Vote' seems all the more poignant given the resignation of the Brexit Secretary, Dominic Raab, and Work and Pensions Secretary, Esther McVey, the following morning, Thursday 15th.
Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Cllr David Tutt, said, 'A people's vote is an opportunity for everyone, regardless of whether they support Brexit or not, to have a say on the final deal or no deal. The call for a People's vote is supported by people from all shades of opinion and all parties. This council supports the 2016 referendum and calls for the Government to give the public the ultimate choice, not politicians. '
Similar motions have been put forward by councils around the country but ultimately only Parliament can decide on whether the public will be given a vote on the Brexit deal.
